ST. PAUL -- Knowing that the balance beam was the event that she gets the best results in, New Ulm's Kayla Goblirsch admits she may have practiced a little more on that event this week in preperation for Saturday's Class A State Gymnastics at Roy Wilkens Auditorium.
That extra work paid off as Goblirsch wrapped up her phenemonal high school gymnastics career with a second-place finish on the balance beam and an 11th-place finish in the All-Around competition at the Class A State Gymnastics Meet on Saturday at Roy Wilkens Auditorium.
Goblirsch had a score of 9.45 on the beam, finishing second behind Watertown-Mayer's Reagan Kelley (9.7125) in that event.
"I'm so excited to come home with a state medal for the first time," the New Ulm Cathedral senior said. "I knew that the beam would be the event that I would have the best chance of medaling on and it's definitely the event I spend the most time on at practice, so to put together a good routine in my last meet ever feels great."
She felt good after the beam routine despite the nerves at first.
"I knew I had to make my aeriel round-off connection series, so after I nailed that, I mean I've probably only nailed it in four or five meets this year, so after I did that, I knew that I could score pretty well," she said.
She finished with an All-Around score of 36.625 and her 11-place All-Around score was nearly the same place as her ninth-place finish her freshman year.
She had an 8.8 on the uneven bars to finish 21st in that event. Lola Visci of Big Lake captured the bars routine with a score of 9.575.
On the vault, Goblirsch had a score of 9.2875 to finish 22nd overall. Anna Mielke of Watertown-Mayer took first overall in that event with a score of 9.8125.
On the floor exercise, she had a score of 9.125, which was good enough for 27th overall. Mielke also won that event with a score of 9.6375.
After a hectic week of practice, she felt good going into Saturday.
"Practice this week went well, but I knew that it would just come down to the day," she said. "It feels great to put together a good routine."
Kelley won the All-Around with a score of 38.425. Watertown-Mayer won the team event on Friday with a score of 145.75.
Goblirsch was a four-time qualifier for state.
"It feels great, I couldn't have done it without my teammates, coaches and family," she said. "I can't believe it's the end of my career, but I couldn't have ended it in a better way."
