Tigers outrun Greyhounds, win 63-44

NEW ULM -- New Ulm Cathedral returned to Tomahawk Conference action on Friday and the Greyhounds lost 63-44 to Springfield. It was the third win overall and its second conference win for the Tigers.
Brooklyn Sturm was one of the Tigers' "thorn" in Cathedral's side all game long. She finished with 25 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Madyson Digmann added 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Marissa Pabst added seven rebounds and Megan Ploeger had six rebounds. Victoria Roiger had five assists.
Margo Finstad led the Greyhounds with 11 points and Emily Schommer scored 10 points.
It was not a good night on the court for Cathedral. Springfield played an all-around solid game on both sides of the basketball. The Tigers rebounded well, played solid defense, shared the ball and denied Cathedral extra looks at the basket. Springfield affected Cathedral's confidence when its defense got key blocks.
Springfield jumped out to an early lead, and Cathedral was unable to mount any type of a challenge to it.
Sturm stole the ball and she scored. On the next trip down the floor, Sturm canned a 3-pointer from the top of the arc. She hit another 3 later on, and she made a 3 at the buzzer to close out the first half. Her shot at the buzzer appeared to bounce out of the basket, but it dropped in. That shot made it 38-25 Springfield at halftime. A lion's share of Sturm's points were in the first half. She had 23 points at halftime.
The Tigers started off the second half with a 6-0 run. Roiger scored, Lillian McCone scored and Roiger scored again, making it 44-25 Springfield. Finstad scored and Sturm scored.
Try as they may, Cathedral just could not get the ball to drop in the basket. One example occurred when Schommer stole the ball, tried for the layup but missed. Springfield rebounded and brought the ball back up the floor again.
Springfield (3-7, 2-4) will play at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday. Cathedral (1-9, 0-8) will play at Renville County West on Tuesday.
