NEW ULM -- Fairmont defeated New Ulm 83-62 on Thursday in Big South Conference girls' basketball action.
The Eagles' record now stands at 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Cardinals' Cadence Becker led all scorers with 23 points. Emma Godahl and Rayah Quiring each added 15 points and Grace Pendergast had 12 points.
Morgan Hulke led the Eagles with 16 points, Madeline Backer had 14 points, Brooklyn Lewis had 13 points and Ramsey Hopp added 11 points.
The Eagles battled back from being down early and they were able to briefly hold the lead on a Hopp 3-pointer. Hopp nailed another 3-pointer later which gave New Ulm the lead again.
Backer dropped in two free throws to tie it at 21-21. Lewis made an underhanded lay-up for the Eagles' final advantage of the night at 23-21.
That basket appeared to wake up Fairmont because it went on a 6-0 run. Becker scored two baskets, Cassidy Schultz scored and Quiring hit two free throws.
Part of the Cardinals' success came from a full-court press, their height advantage and using that for rebounding and getting extra looks at the basket. Fairmont led 43-30 at halftime.
The Eagles had some good things happening from their first-half press. They later stopped using the press. Gudahl hit a 3-pointer near the end of the first half.
In the second half, Fairmont continued to score, leading by as many as 29 points. That biggest advantage came late in the contest when Pendergast hit a 3-pointer, making it 69-40 Fairmont. Becker scored on a backdoor lay-up and an inside basket. Lewis hit back-to-back 3-pointers to end the game.
Friday's game against Hutchinson has beeen postponed due to inclment weather. A make-up date is yet to be determined.
