Eagles dominate Cardinals, win 8-1
NEW ULM — Michelle Smith and Maddie O’Connor each scored two goals as New Ulm outshot Fairmont 37-9 in the game and went on to top the Cardinals 8-1 Thursday night in a Big South Conference girls’ hockey game at the New Ulm Civic Center.
Jada Rahe, Brooke Arneson, Julia Helget and Aftin Hulke each added goals.
Helget added three assists to her resume with O’Connor, Evie Sellner, Rahe, Smith, Malorie Anderson and Brooke Merkel each adding a helper.
Eagles goaltender Ava Brennen stopped eight of nine Fairmont shots as New Ulm improved to 5-0 in conference play and 6-0 overall.
“I thought that our creativity puck control offensively was very good tonight,” Eagles coach Kirsten Faber said. “We worked on getting pucks off quicker yesterday in practice and I thought that they did a nice job responding on that tonight. We buried pucks and were better on rebounds than we have been.”
The Eagles took advantage of a rebounded puck when Rahe put a rebounded Smith shot by Cardinals’ goalie Rachel O’Connor at the 1:34 mark.
O’Connor’s goal on a 2-on-1 break upped the lead to 2-0 after the first period.
Arneson’s goal — also on a rebound — upped the lead to 3-0 at the 2:17 mark of the second period before Fairmont’s Mackenzie Householder got the lone Cardinals goal two minutes later.
But Smith’s first goal of the game was followed by Helget’s goal 5 minutes later gave New Ulm a 5-1 lead going into the third period.
There, New Ulm added another three goals off of the sticks of O’Connor, Smith and Hulke.
Faber was happy to see the balanced scoring from the Eagles.
“We are going to need to have that scoring from our second group and I like the way that those four that we plugged into that second line were moving the puck.”
The game Friday night between New Ulm and Delano-Rockford has been postponed by weather.
The Eagles next game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Albert Lea at the New Ulm Civic Center.
