Crusaders sweep Greyhounds

ARLINGTON -- Aside from having the task of facing the No. 1 seed in the Section 2A, North Subsection playoffs, New Ulm Cathedral had another tough task on its hands: trying to figure out how to defend Iowa State University bound Lilly Wachholz.
Wachholz and company gave the Greyhounds plenty of fits and the Crusaders (27-2) advanced to the Section 2A, North Subsection finals with a quick 25-12, 25-15, 25-10 victory over the Greyhounds on Monday at Sibley East High School.
The loss ends Cathedral's season at 20-6.
Wachholz finished the match with 10 kills and her height and ability to hit the ball hard was tough to adjust to early on for the Greyhounds. The Crusaders jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set and a kill by Wachholz gave them a 7-3 lead.
Megan Haala's kill cut Mayer Lutheran's lead to 13-7, but the Crusaders got another kill from Wachholz to go up 16-8 and they ran away with the first set, closing it out on an ace serve.
Cathedral's best set was the second one, a set in which it trailed 9-5 after a Mayer Lutheran hitting error. But once again, the Crusaders were too much up front and closed the second set with a kill from Anika Jilek.
Cathedral tied the Crusaders 5-5 in the third set, but the Crusaders went on a 10-0 run to end any threat. An ace serve from Marley Martin put the Crusaders up 14-5 and they were able to close the door and the match out with a 25-10 third-set score.
Jenna Hotovec led Cathedral with eight kills and nine digs, while Sydney Helget added seven kills. Lily Brennan had 12 digs and Emily Schommer had 12 set assists.
