Area roundup: GFW sweeps MCW, Edgerton sweeps Madelia

GFW 3, MCW 0

SHERBURN — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop swept Martin County West 25-22, 25-13, 25-20 on Tuesday night in nonconference volleyball action.

The Thunderbirds were led by Julia Schweiss’ 15 kills and three blocks, while Jenna Schweiss had nine kills. Brynn Busse had 28 set assists and 11 digs also for GFW, while Sarah Black added eight digs.

GFW (12-12) begins playoffs next week.

Edgerton 3, Madelia 0

MADELIA — Edgerton swept Madelia 25-10, 25-20, 26-24 on Tuesday in nonconference volleyball action.

The Blackhawks were led by Brooke Lensing’s 10 kills, while Dora Facundo had six digs and Ashley Sorenson had three ace serves. Abby Jacobs added two blocks for Madelia.

Madelia (10-18-1) begins playoffs next week.

WWG 3, Wabasso 0

WESTRBOOK — Westbrook-Walnut Grove swept Wabasso 25-23, 25-13, 25-14 on Tuesday in nonconference volleyball action.

The Rabbits were led by Alivia Olson’s nine kills, while Kelsey Frank had 16 set assists, three blocks and three aces. Audrey Johnson added 10 digs for Wabasso, while Kelsey Fischer had three blocks and two aces.

Wabasso (6-16) begins playoff action next week.

MACCRAY 3,

Cedar Mountain 0

MORGAN — MACCRAY swept Cedar Mountain 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 on Tuesday night in nonconference volleyball action.

Cedar Mountain was led by Nadia Meyers’ eight kills, while Megan Sandgren and Hailey Hollar each had seven kills. Meyers also had 18 set assists, while Hollar and Morgan Engholm each had 13 digs. Sandrgen also had 11 digs, while Lauren Baringer had eight.

Cedar Mountain (17-10) begins playoff action next week.

Men’s Soccer

Augsburg 4, MLC 0

MINNEAPOLIS — The Martin Luther College men’s soccer team dropped its final non-conference match of the season by the score of 4-0 at Augsburg on Tuesday.

The Knights knew they would have their hands full against the Auggies, who entered the day tied for second in the MIAC, and Augsburg struck twice early in the first half with goals in the 14th and 19th minutes, respectively to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Auggies added a third tally in the 52nd minute to push their lead to four, and then capped the scoring in the 82nd minute en route to the win.

Michael Friesenegger was solid in net for the Knights, stopping 11 of the 15 Augsburg shots on goal in the game and keeping the deficit at four.

Noah Kvidt, Lucas Martin, Nathan Pausma and Xander Heiman accounted for the four MLC shots on goal in the game.

The Knights fell to 2-12 on the season in defeat.
