Rebels run past Chargers

NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran got the quick score that it wanted. Unfortunately for the Chargers, that was the only score of the game.

MVL’s Cole Thompson took a pass from his brother Luke and ran it 58 yards for a touchdown on MVL’s third play of the game. That gave the Chargers an early 6-0 lead, but Murray County Central (7-0) scored the next 30 points in a 30-6 victory over the Chargers (3-4) on Friday at Johnson Field.

The Chargers battled the Rebels as well anyone this season, but the Rebels got four touchdowns from Carter Benda.

“I didn’t think it was a bad game at all, we just didn’t make a few plays in the first half, I thought we played as even as we could in the first half, we had opportunities, two fourth-and-short and one third-and-short,” MVL coach Jim Buboltz said. “Truthfully against teams like this, you have to make those plays.”

MVL kept up the aggression all game, throwing deep to Cole Thompson to keep the MCC defense on its heels.

“He’s gifted out there in isolation, if we can get him in open space, more times than not, good things are going to happen,” Buboltz said. “It was a good game by our guys, that’s a good football team that we played, hats off to them and I think that’s as tough as they’ve been played in a while.”

Trailing 6-0, the Rebels got on the board when Benda scored from 6 yards out to give them an 8-6 lead after the 2-point conversion with 5:44 left in the first quarter.

Benda scored on the first play of the second quarter to make it 16-6, where it stood until halftime.

Benda scored his third touchdown of the game on MCC’s first drive of the second half to make it 24-6. His fourth score of the game came on the next drive when he scored on a 49-yard play on the second play of the drive for the final 30-6 margin.

With MEA next week, MVL has to prepare for Springfield quickly. The Chargers are at Springfield next Wednesday.

“Same type of thing, same type of plan, we’re going to try to get our guys spread out and in some positions where they can be dangerous,” Buboltz said.
