Area roundup: Thunderbirds top Rabbits, Cedar Mountain sweeps ACGC

Prep Volleyball

GFW 3, Wabasso 1

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop picked up a 21-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-23 win over Wabasso on Tuesday night in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

Brynn Busse led the way for the Thunderbirds with 44 set assists and 12 digs, while Julia Schweiss racked up 29 kills and four blocks. Julia Schafer added 10 kills for GFW, while Halle Bleick had 10 digs, Taylor Haas had nine digs and Jenna Schweiss had two blocks.

Wabasso got 12 kills from Natasha Doubler, while Ashlyn Daub and Alivia Olson each had 10 kills. Kelsey Frank had 34 set assists. 17 digs, five blocks and four aces also for the Rabbits, while Audrey Johnson had 15 digs.

GFW (10-11, 3-4) is at Springfield on Thursday, while Wabasso (6-14, 2-5) is at Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Monday.

Cedar Mountain 3,

ACGC 0

MORGAN — Cedar Mountain swept Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 25-16, 25-9, 25-15 on Tuesday night in nonconference volleyball action.

The Cougars were led by Hailey Hollar, who had 11 kills and 19 digs. Nadia Meyers had 24 set assists, eight kills, 10 digs, five aces and two blocks for Cedar Mountain also, while Megan Sandgren had eight kills and 13 digs, Teresa Larsen had six kills, Mykenna Vollmer had five kills, 12 digs and two aces and Morgan Engholm had 10 digs.

The Cougars (16-8, 6-1) are at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday.

Nicollet 3, Mankato Loyola 0

MANKATO — Nicollet rebounded from a loss to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Monday by sweeping Mankato Loyola 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 in Valley Conference volleyball action on Tuesday.

The Raiders were led by Brooklyn Bode’s 13 kills, while Hayley Selby had seven kills and four blocks. Marah Hulke added 18 set assists and seven digs for Nicollet, while Brooklyn Gohr had four aces and 10 digs.

The Raiders (17-10, 6-2) host New Ulm Cathedral on Monday.

Late Monday

Sleepy Eye 3, St. Clair 1

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye defeated St. Clair 22-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 in nonconference volleyball on Monday.

Kadence Hesse had 14 kills and 17 digs and Brooke Arneson had 17 set assists and eight digs. Morgan Hoffmann finished with nine kills.

Sleepy Eye plays at Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Thursday.

Girls’ Soccer

Jordan 5, New Ulm 0

JORDAN — Jordan picked up a 5-0 shutout win over New Ulm on Tuesday in Section 2AA girls’ soccer playoff action.

The Eagles had 10 shots on goal, and goalie Ariana Dreyer had 20 saves.

New Ulm end its season with a 5-9-2 record.

Women’s Soccer

BLC 4, MLC 0

MANKATO — The Martin Luther College women’s soccer team saw its win streak stopped at two in a 4-0 loss at Bethany Lutheran on Tuesday.

Megan Marohn led MLC with four shots on goal. Hannah Schroeder added three total shots.

Grace Sievert stopped three of the Vikings’ seven shots on goal in the game.

Men’s Soccer

BLC 12, MLC 1

MANKATO — The Martin Luther College men’s soccer team could not slow first-place Bethany Lutheran in a 12-1 loss on Tuesday.

The Vikings were in control from the jump, scoring 28 seconds into the game and adding three more goals in the first half.

The second half proved more of the same, as BLC added eight goals, while the Knights were able to counter with only one from Josiah Wordell in the 74th minute.

Nine different BLC players scored, led by the UMAC’s leading scorer Max Busch with three goals.
