Area roundup: River Valley tops New Ulm 5-2 in girls' tennis

River Valley 5, New Ulm 2
SLEEPY EYE -- River Valley defeated New Ulm 5-2 in a Big South Conference girls' tennis match on Thursday.
For New Ulm, Makiah Otto won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Lydia King won 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) at No. 3 singles.
For River Valley, Kaydince Thoms won 6-2, 6-1 over Malia Emerson at No. 2 singes and Courtlyn Runek won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles over Calyn Glaser.
River Valley swept the doubles competition to pick up the win. New Ulm is at St. Peter on Monday.
Prep volleyball
Cathedral 3, BLHS 0
HECTOR -- New Ulm Cathedral swept Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 25-14, 25-12, 25-15 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match on Thursday.
Sydnee Helget had 19 kills and Annie Edwards had 25 set assists for the Greyhounds. Lily Brennan finished with nine kills and Megan Haala finished with 13 digs. Jenna Hotovec had 16 digs for Cathedral.
Cathedral (4-1, 2-0) is at the Westbrook-Walnut Grove tournament on Saturday.
Springfield 3, Sleepy Eye 2
SLEEPY EYE -- Springfield came back to top Sleepy Eye in five sets of Tomahawk Conference volleyball action on Thursday night, winning 24-26, 25-8, 22-25, 25-22, 15-10.
Brooklyn Sturm led the Tigers (1-3, 1-0) with 12 kills and 18 digs, while Tori Roiger had 19 set assists and Jaeli Richert had 14 set assists, 10 digs and four kills. Bree Rasmussen had 16 digs for Springfield, while Maddy Digmann had 15 digs and five kills. Brenna Pabst and Haley Runck also had five kills each for the Tigers.
St. Mary's 3, Wabasso 0
WABASSO -- Sleepy Eye St. Mary's swept Wabasso 25-8, 25-9, 26-24 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match on Thursday.
Julia Helget had seven digs, four blocks, two kills and three aces for the Knights and Madison Mathiowetz had nine kills, six digs, three aces and two blocks. Allie Labat finished with seven set assists and two aces and Jaci Domeier finished with five blocks, five digs and four kills. Bella Hoffmann finished with 16 set assists.
St. Mary's (3-0, 1-0) is at the Sleepy Eye Invite on Saturday.
Cedar Mountain 3, GFW 2
MORGAN -- Cedar Mountain defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 27-25, 20-25, 19-25, 25-16, 19-17 in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match on Thursday.
For GFW, Julia Schweiss had 25 kills and Taylor Schafer had 10 kills. Taylor Haas had 40 digs and Halle Bleick finished with 19 digs. Brynn Busse had 17 digs and 48 set assists.
Megan Sandgren had 18 kills for Cedar Mountain and Teresa Larsen had 15 kills. Hailey Hollar finished with 10 kills and 23 digs and Nadia Meyers finished with 40 set assists and 21 digs. Morgan Engholm had 19 digs while Mykenna Vollmer and Lauren Baringer each had 17 digs.
GFW hosts Redwood Valley on Monday.
Cleveland 3, Nicollet 0
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland swept Nicollet 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 on Thursday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.
Brooklyn Bode led Nicollet with seven kills, while Marah Hulke had eight set assists and three digs. Also for the Raiders, Hayley Selby had six blocks, while Bode and Emily Lorentz each had two aces.
Nicollet (0-2, 0-2) is at a St. Peter tournament on Saturday.
Prep cross-country
Springfield/Cedar Mountain girls take 3rd, boys 5th at Tracy meet
TRACY -- The Springfield/Cedar Mountain girls' cross-country team finished third at the Tracy Meet on Thursday, while the boys finished fifth.
Emmi McCone finished 10th overall with a time of 21:47, while Lilly McCone finished 11th (22:01), Skyla Dauer took 13th (22:40), Katie Thram took 16th (22:57) and Marissa Pabst finished 18th (22:59). Leading the Springfield/CM boys was Ben Potter, who took 22nd (19:37). Zach Hensch finished 24th (19:42), Matt Groebner took 26th (19:46) and Tristan Groebner took 29th (19:57).
College volleyball
Macalester 3, MLC 1
ST. PAUL -- The Martin Luther College volleyball team lost its non-conference match at Macalester 25-18, 14-25, 25-23, 25-17 on Wednesday.
The Knights struggled to get much going in a first-set defeat, but came back to dominate the second set 25-14 to tie the match 1-1.
The teams went back and fourth in the important third set, with the Knights coming back from a late deficit to tie the game 23-23 before Macalester won the final two points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
MLC struggled on the attack in the first and fourth sets, finishing with an attack efficiency of -.023 thanks to 31 attack errors. Kelsey Birschbach led the team with nine kills, while Hannah Willems added five.
The Knights recorded eight total blocks. Abigail Winkel had four blocks, while Rhianna Hunter and Willems each had three.
Kate Aswege led the team with 23 digs. Naomi Bridgemen finished with 18 digs.
MLC fell to 0-4 on the season in defeat. The Knights will return to action this weekend when they play a tournament hosted by St. Catherine and Hamline.
Men's soccer
Viterbo 5, MLC 0
LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The MLC men’s soccer team lost 5-0 at Viterbo University on Thursday.
The V-Hawks built an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals in the 11th and 20th minutes, respectively, and then added three more tallies in the final 17 minutes of the second half to secure the win.
Michael Friesenegger started in goal and recorded four saves on six shots on goal.
Noah Kvidt and Grant Gawrisch were credited with the Knights’ two shots on goal.
The Knights fell to 0-3-0 in defeat and return to action until Wednesday, September 22, when they host Buena Vista.
Women's soccer
Viterbo 5, MLC 0
LA CROSSE, Wis. --The MLC women’s soccer team lost its game at Viterbo 5-0 on Thursday.
The V-Hawks took control from the start, as Abigail Mumm scored 61 into the game, and then added another goal in the sixth minute.
After Viterbo scored twice more in the first half, Mumm scored her third goal of the game in the 47th minute to finish off the scoring.
The Knights were credited with four shots, including two shots on goal. Kaitlin Butler and Madeline Walz each recorded one shot on goal.
The Knights fell to 0-3-0 on the season in defeat and will return to action on Thursday, September 16, when they travel to UW-River Falls for a game scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
