NEW ULM -- Buena Vista University swept Martin Luther College 25-23, 26-24, 25-18 on Wednesday in nonconference womens' volleyball action. It was the season opener for MLC.
The Knights fell behind early in the first set, but they rallied back to hold the lead for most of the set. MLC's biggest lead was 5 points, which it held twice.
BVU kept battling back taking advantage of a few MLC miscues The Beavers made a key front line double block to close the gap. Their front line tied on a front line tip, and took the lead on an MLC mistake. BVU earned the final 3 points to ake the first set.
The Beavers started out strong in the second set. MLC was able to regain the lead when a Buena Vista player hit the ball into the net. An out-of-bounds serve and two MLC mistakes gave BVU the second set.
Set three was competitive with both teams either holding slim leads or it being tied. There were six ties and two lead changes in it. A hitting error gave MLC a 16-15 advantage, and later, MLC hit the ball in the net to tie it at 16-16. The Beavers took advantage of MLC missteps, unforced errors and put together a 9-2 run to clinch the victory.
Kylie Wolf had 16 set assists and seven digs. Katelyn Aswege had 14 digs. Kelsey Birschback had nine kills and Hannah Willems added seven kills for the Knights.
MLC (0-1) will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday.
