NEW ULM -- In June, Ethan Stade said that he was going to play baseball at Southwest State University in Marshall next season.
But like a good pitcher who has a variety of pitches, he threw a change up at the Mustangs.
"I am now going to attend Minnesota State University and play baseball for the Mavericks," the southpaw pitcher said.
"Their coach (Matt Magers) had contacted me after seeing me pitch," Stade said. "He was interested and Minnesota State was a school that was in my top three. So being able to go there for the academics and baseball was huge for me. Everything seemed to align for me perfectly."
Stade said that Magers told him that he will more than likely be redshirted his freshman year.
"But he said if I put the time and effort into it he would not be surprised I played as a true freshman," Stade said.
Stade said that the decision to change was tough.
"I was torn -- I had to think about that for two weeks. There were a lot factors that I had to think over."
The decision means that instead of being an opponent of high school teammate Cole Ranweiler in college, he would now continue to be a teammate.
"I told him at a legion game and he was pretty excited."
