Silver splits DH with Mankato Royals

NEW ULM — New Ulm VFW Silver scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to come back and down the Mankato Royals 7-4 in Game 1 of a VFW baseball doubleheader on Wednesday at Mueller Park.

In Game 2, the Royals answered with a 5-0 win.

In that fourth inning of Game 1, Silver sent nine batters to the plate. Kaden Wilson started things with a single.

Parker Kamm came in as a courtesy runner. Kamm scored the tying run on Adam Wiltscheck’s double to left field.

Wiltscheck scored the eventual game-winning run on Matt Seidl’s single for a 4-3 Silver advantage. Blaine Olson singled to left field. Olson scored on Kaden Larson’s single. Seidl later scored on a sacrifice and Larson scored on a Royal error, making it 7-3 Silver.

The Royals answered with a run of their own int he top of the fifth inning. Talay Sortell cracked a double to left field. He moved to third base on a wild pitch and he scored on Adam Timm’s single to left field. Silver’s pitching and defense shut down the Royals after that and preserve Silver’s victory.

Early on, Mankato jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Evan Wiebers hit a single to left field. He stole second base, moved to third base on Sortell’s single. Wiebers scored on a Silver error for the Royals’ first run. Sortell scored Mankato’s second run on a sacrifice.

Silver answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning. Zach Riederer singled, stole second and scored from second on Brock Wellmann’s single to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Olson’s lead-off single to center field in the bottom of the third inning helped Silver tie the contest. Olson advanced to second on a sacrifice, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Logan Mielke’s single to tie it at 2-2.

The Royals regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Kaylor Chamberlain scratched out an infield single. He went to second on Weston Johnson’s walk. Chamberlain scored on Brody Koberoski’s fly-out to center field for a 3-2 Royal lead.

Mankato stranded a total of eight runners in Game 1, while Silver left six on base. Mankato had three errors, while Silver had only one.

Silver struggled in the second game, managing two hits against the Royals.

Silver is at Mankato West on Tuesday night.
