Brewers squeak by Hanska in regular season opener

NEW ULM — Mitch Bockenstedt held Hanska bats to four hits through eight innings and stuck out 11 Lakers’ batters as the New Ulm Brewers squeaked by Hanska 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Johnson Park in the Tomahawk East League regular season opener for both teams.

Lefthander Aaron Portner took the mound loss for the Lakers.

Chris Cariveau got the save for the Brewers.

Portner went seven innings and allowed the lone run in the game on a sixth inning RBI double from Braden Zimmerman. It was also the inning where New Ulm got all three of their hits.

Portner fanned five in a losing effort.

Brady Mosenden had three of the six Hanska hits in the game.

Through the first five innings, both Portner and Bockenstedt dominated opposing batters.

Portner had not allowed a hit and had permitted only three batters to reach base, those coming on two walks and a hit batsman.

Bockenstedt had scattered three hits through five innings.

But in the sixth, the Brewers, who host Bird Island Wednesday night at 7:30 at Mueller Park, solved Portner.

J. T. Hoffmann, who had been a strikeout victim in his first two at-bats against Portner, broke up the no-hitter with a line single to right field.

Andrew Peters followed with an infeld single.

Zimmmerman then followed with a double to right that scored Hoffmann for the lone run of the game.

Hanska did mount a scoring threat in the top of the seventh on a fielder’s choice, an single and an infield error to load the bases.

But Bockenstedt got the last out of the inning on a fielder’s choice.

The Lakers had another threat in the top of the ninth off of Cariveau when Portner led off wih a double.

But two groundouts and called third strike ended the game.
