Knights advance with 3-1 win over Storm

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College women’s soccer team defeated Crown College 3-1 on Wednesday to advance to the next round of the UMAC Postseason Tournament.

Hannah Schroeder broke free off a pass from Nicole Porter to give the Knights a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.

The Knights continued to press throughout the first half and were rewarded in the 34th minute when Tabitha Vannieuwenhoven scored off a rebound to push the lead to 2-0 going into halftime.

Schroeder struck again early in the second half as she took a pass from Megan Marohn and weaved her way around the Storm defense and keeper to score to for the second time in the game (and seventh this season) in the 48th minute.

MLC goalie Mollie Fischer stopped eight of the nine shots she faced in goal on the day, while the Knights outshot the Storm 34-15 overall and 16-9 in shots on goal.

MLC improved to 4-5 on the season with the win. Crown dropped to 2-7 in defeat.

The Knights will now play at Bethany Lutheran College in the fifth-place game on Saturday.
