ST. BONIFACIUS -- The Martin Luther College men’s soccer team scored twice early and never looked back in a 3-1 win at Crown College on Tuesday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action.
The Knights wasted little time taking control of the game, as Isaias Santos scored in the fifth minute off a pass from Clay Hirsch to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead.
David Martin joined in the fun shortly after, netting his third goal of the season in the 10th minute off assists from Santos and Lucas Martin to push the lead to 2-0.
The Storm tried to come back with a goal in the 29th minute, but Santos gave the momentum back to the Knights with his second tally of the game in the 40th minute to give MLC its two-goal margin again.
That would be all the Knights needed, as the defense and keeper Joshua Higgins held the Storm off the scoreboard the rest of the way to secure the win.
Santos’ two goals pushed his team-leading total to four on the season, and his assist was his second of the season. Santos also led MLC with five total shots in the game, while Lucas Martin added four (three on goal).
Higgins, who was named UMAC Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, stopped eight of the nine shots he faced in goal.
The Knights improved to 2-3-2 on the season and in UMAC play with the win. Crown fell to 0-7 overall and in league play in defeat.
MLC will return home for its regular season finale on Saturday when it hosts North Central in a game scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
Women's Soccer
MLC 1, Crown 0
ST. BONIFACIUS -- The MLC women’s soccer team won in style by the score of 1-0 in overtime in UMAC action at Crown College on Tuesday.
The two teams battled back and forth throughout regulation, but neither could find a goal before they went into overtime.
In the extra period, the Knights continued to press in the Storm end of the field, but still could not find a goal. Finally, as the clock was winding down on the first overtime, Lydia Bitter gained possession following a Crown goal kick, maneuvered down the field, and Hannah Schroeder sent home Morgan Spoehr’s cross inside the box to end the game with around one minute remaining in the first overtime.
Schroeder, who has been consistently strong in her first collegiate season but had not been able to find the back of the net through the first six games, made her first collegiate goal count in the extra period. She also led all players in the game with eight total shots, including three shots on goal.
The defense held the Storm out of trouble for much of the night, and keeper Mollie Fischer was there to clean up the rest. Fischer stopped all nine shots she faced to record her first shutout of the season and the eighth shutout of her career.
MLC improved to 2-5 on the season and in UMAC play with the win. Crown fell to 2-5 overall and in league play in defeat.
The Knights will return home to host North Central University on Saturday in the regular season finale. That game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
