State semifinals begin Friday for area wrestlers

ST. MICHAEL — New Ulm Area freshman Parker Kamm, junior Jaden Drill and senior Cole Ranweiler will all return to the mats this Friday at St. Michael-Albertville High School for the State Individual Wrestling Championships.

They will represent Class AA and begin wrestling in their weight class’s eight-man bracket at 2 p.m., with the team tournament beginning at 9 a.m. earlier that morning.

Kamm (106) is currently 34-5 and will first take on Alexandria’s Mason Mcgrane, who is a freshman that holds a 29-8 record. Drill (285) holds a record of 31-5 and will first face Simley’s Bennett Tabor, a senior that has a 30-0 record.

Ranweiler (182) is currently 32-1 and will first match up with 22-2 senior Austin Freerksen of Byron.

Also wrestling from the area at state are Springfield senior Joe Anderson, Nicollet senior Tucker Wills, Sibley East senior Derek Steele and Sibley East junior Drayden Morton. They will all represent Class A and begin wrestling at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Anderson (145) holds a 34-1 record and will first take on Royalton-Upsala’s Jacob Leibold, who holds a 22-1 record.

Wills, wrestling at 138 for Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Area, will first wrestle sophomore John Paul Fitzpatrick of Crosby-Ironton. Wills is 21-6 this year, while Fitzpatrick holds a 34-1 record.

Steele (126) has a 33-0 record and will first match up with 23-11 sophomore Will Gorecki of Royalton-Upsala. Morton (132) is 30-0 this season and will first take on Thomas Freking, a 30-8 sophomore of Jackson County Central.

Steele and Morton are both first-place medalists from last year’s individual tournament.
