St. Mary’s continues to roll

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s continued its winning ways when it crushed Minnesota Valley Lutheran 78-29 on Tuesday in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action. It was the first loss for the Chargers.

Madison Mathiowetz scored 25 points for the Knights in the first half alone. She finished the game with 32 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and four steals.

Sydney Windschitl added 12 points, five assists and three steals. Reagan Severson had 9 points, four rebounds and three assists. Sophie Portner scored 7 points, she had five rebounds and two assists.

Late in the first half, Mathiwetz rebounded a missed MVL shot. She threw a court length pass to Sydney Windschitl, who scored on a fastbreak layup for a 46-11 Knight lead. St. Mary’s build solid lead early on, and it never lost momentum. The Knights led 48-18 at halftime.

St. Mary’s continued its scoring ways in the second half. It made crisp passes, played solid defense (which limited MVL to one or two shots at the basket).

Kaylee Hunter led MVL with 10 points.

St. Mary’s (4-0) will travel to New Ulm Cathedral on Friday. MVL (3-1) will travel to face Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (0-2) on Friday.
