MARSHALL – While there was no section or state tournament this year, the Marshall and New Ulm volleyball teams still had some hardware to play for in their final match of the season on Friday. The Tigers and Eagles battled for the Big South Conference championship, with Marshall coming away with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-14) victory over New Ulm.

Marshall raced out to a quick 5-2 lead in Set 1 before pushing its advantage to 10-4. The Tigers continued to increase their lead thanks to a strong serving effort, going up double digits at 14-4 before ultimately taking the frame 25-10.

The second set saw another strong start by Marshall, as the Tigers built a 7-2 lead before going up 12-4. Marshall continued to create separation over the next few possessions, pushing its lead to 11 at 17-6. New Ulm would cut the deficit back to single digits, but Marshall quickly responded and took the second frame 25-11 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set 3 was more back-and-forth to start, as the Eagles held a slim 4-3 lead before Marshall battled back to take a 10-7 advantage. The Tigers then went on an 9-2 run to take a 19-9 lead before claiming the final frame 25-14.
