Tigers pick up victory over Greyhounds
NEW ULM — Springfield defeated New Ulm Cathedral on Friday 19-7 in Southwest District football action.
Springfield took its initial possession of the game and moved down the field. Brendon Buerkle threw to Tori Helget for an 8-yard gain. Kadin Johnson gained 7-yards and a first down. Ashtin Johnson ran 25-yards for a touchdown with 8:49 left in the first quarter. Mark Peschges kicked for the extra point and a 7-0 Tiger lead and they took that lead into halftime.
Cathedral took possession of the ball at its own 25 in the third quarter. Sam Knowles threw a pass to Eric Furth and that set up a 31-yard touchdown by Furth with 10 minutes left in the third quarter. Justin Berg’s kick tied it at 7-7.
Later, the Greyhounds tried a fake punt, but the Tiger defense stopped the play in its tracks. Two plays later, Johnson ran 10-yards for a touchdown with 10:04 remaining. Peschges’ kick was blocked, making it 13-7 Springfield.
Springfield’s MaCoy Krick intercepted a Knowles pass at the Springfield 30-yard line. Buerkle hit Johnson for a key first down play. Two plays later, Buerkle tossed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Toll with 2:47 remaining in the contest. Buerkle tried to pass the ball for the 2-point conversion, but it was incomplete.
Furth led Cathedral with 16 carries for 94-yards and one touchdown. Berg had five receptions for 55-yards.
Defensively, Knowles and Noah Wilmes had 12 tackles apiece.
Cathedral will travel to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Friday. Springfield will play at Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Friday.
