Column: Knowles has a big night in Section 2A playoff game

Those who were at the New Ulm Cathedral boys’ basketball game on Saturday at Cathedral saw history made when senior Chris Knowles scored a New Ulm Cathedral and City of New Ulm record for a game when he poured in 51 points in a 95-63 win.

After the game Knowles said that setting a single-game and city record for points felt great.

“It is amazing and I am speechless right now,” Knowles said.

The senior forward did not have to do any talking on the court. His actions on the court did all of his taking as he broke Mike Wilfahrt’s Cathedral record of 43 points in a single game.

“Chris plays the game hard,” Cathedral coach Alan Woitas said. “His teammates did a nice job of getting him the ball in good spots and he attacked the hoop all night. He made some shots, he made some mid-rangers and he scored some in post-ups. He is a very versatile player.”

Cathedral now meets Mayer Lutheran at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday at St. Peter High School. The Greyhounds defeated the Crusaders 67-64 on December 12 in Mayer earlier.

BREWERS HAVE 28-GAME SCHEDULE: The New Ulm Brewers will play a 28-game schedule this season with 15 of those games at Johnson Park.

“New Ulm Day” is scheduled in for Sunday, June 14 against Lamberton.

“Junior Baseball Night” will be held Sunday, June 21 when the Brewers host Hanska. “Big Raffle Night” at Johnson Park is Wednesday, June 24 when New Ulm hosts Springfield.

For the first time ever, the All-Star game between the Tomahawk League and the Cornbelt League will be held st Johnson Park on Friday, July 10.

NEW ULM/SLEEPY EYE HOCKEY PREPARING TO HOST DUAL STATE TOURNAMENT: The New Ulm/Sleepy Eye Hockey Association is preparing to host a dual state tournament March 13-15th at the New Ulm Civic Center.

“Right now the biggest thing is co-ordinating the over 300 volunteer hours that we need,” outgoing President Sean Fingland said. “And we are also setting up for two banquets because of the dual state tournament. The Bantam B is at the New Ulm Event Center at 7 p.m. and the PeeWee B is at Turner Hall at 7:30 p.m. Those banquets could have up to 400 people at each banquet. With 16 teams coming to the tournament and 17 players per team along with the coaches and the team reps, that is a lot of people in New Ulm.”

Both banquets are on Friday and are not open to the public.

Fingland said that author Ross Bernstein will be the guest speaker at both banquets so that is the reason for the staggered banquet times.

“We are going to take 130-140 hotel rooms that we need in New Ulm and Sleepy Eye. We will also need hotel rooms in Mankato and the surrounding towns.”
