Three-goal third lifts Steel past Mustangs

NEW ULM — Keegan Bauman’s first goal of the game tied the score with Peoria at 2-2 in the third period.

His second goal — and 13th of the season — sealed a comeback win as the New Ulm Steel downed the Mustangs 4-2 Saturday night in an NA3HL game at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Michael Savelkoul and Joey Gimberlin each scored goals for the Steel, with Savelkoul, Bauman, Nick Wieben, Parker Dorn, Mason Enright and Teddy Lillico adding helpers.

Steel goalie A.J. Cohen stopped 20 of 22 Peoria shots.

For the Steel and coach Zach Stepan, the win was the second straight over Peoria after a 3-0 win Friday.

“We finally seem to have found our groove again,” Stepan said. “The guys put in a lot of work this week so they deserved what they got this weekend.”

The Steel fell behind 2-1 after two periods, with Savelkoul’s 10th goal of the year being the lone score for New Ulm in the first 40 minutes.

But in the third period, the tandem of Bauman and Jacob Halvorson worked to tie the game when Bauman took a pretty pass from Halvorson on a 2-on-1 break to tie the game at the 6:34 mark.

Six minutes later, Joey Gimberlin’s one-timer got by Peoria goalie Jayden Gardner for a 3-2 lead.

Bauman sealed the contest at the 15:24 mark as the Steel improved to 15-11-2-1 in the West.

They play Wednesday at Alexandria.
