Prep roundup: Windschitl hits 1,000 career points for St. Mary’s

Girls’ basketball

St. Mary’s 58, Springfield 51

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Sydney Windschitl scored her 1,000th career point as St. Marys defeated Springfield 58-51 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

Windschitl led the team with 22 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Also for St. Mary’s, Madison Mathiowetz had 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists and Reagan Severson had 8 points.

Springfield was led by Sydney Hauger, who scored 18 points and Courtney Wendt, who scored 13 points.

St. Mary’s hosts Nicollet/Loyola on Thursday at 6 p.m. Springfield plays at Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

MVL 83, Wabasso 50

WABASSO — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Wabasso in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game on Tuesday.

For MVL, Abby Riederer has 23 points, seven rebounds and seven steals and Emma Nelson had 21 points and 14 rebounds. Kaylee Hunter had 12 points and six steals and Maddie Pearson had six assists.

Sarah Franta had 14 points and Cora Eichten had 12 points for the Rabbits.

MVL (1-1, 1-0) is at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday.

Sleepy Eye 46, GFW 39

WINTHROP — Sleepy Eye defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 46-39 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk conference girls’ basketball game.

Sleepy Eye’s Brittney Dittbenner had 12 points and three steals. Also for Sleepy Eye, Kadence Hesse had 11 points, four assists, six rebounds and two steals, Breaunna Mertz had 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks and Brooklyn Moldan had 6 points and seven rebounds.

For GFW, Abby Heimkes had 13 points.

Sleepy Eye (3-0, 1-0) plays on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Red Rock Central.

Boys’ basketball

Cathedral 58, Loyola 54

MANKATO — New Ulm Cathedral’s Jon Zinniel scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had five assists as New Ulm Cathedral defeated Mankato Loyola in a nonconference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday.

James Gillis had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists and Chris Knowles had 12 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Ben Ellingworth had 22 points and Hudson Godfrey has 14 points to lead Loyola.

Cathedral (1-0) hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday.

Nicollet 72, St. James 56

NICOLLET — Shane Stevensen scored 26 points and grabbed six rebounds as Nicollet defeated St. James in a nonconference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Riley Hulke scored 25 points, had six assists and five steals and Ben Radke scored 5 points and had 10 rebounds.

Springfield 90, RRC 32

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield defeated Red Rock Central 90-32 in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Springfield was led by Decker Scheffler, who scored 28 points. Also for Springfield, Mitchell Buerkle had 18 points, Ivan Hovland had 13 points and Nolan Hovland had nine points and 10 assists.

Sam Helmer scored 11 points for RRC.

Springfield (1-0) plays on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at New Ulm Cathedral.

Sleepy Eye 45, MCC 42

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye defeated Murray County Central in a nonconference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Kegan Heiderscheidt led Sleepy Eye with 27 points, eight rebounds and six steals and Trey Heiderscheidt had eight steals. Erizen Traconis had eight points.

Fulda 65, Madelia 61

FULDA — Fulda defeated Madelia 65-61 on Tuesday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Madelia was led by Je’Sean Glover with 27 points and nine rebounds and Kurt Lugo with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Madelia (0-1) hosts a tournament on Friday at 6 p.m.

Girls’ hockey

New Ulm 7,

Worthington 0

NEW ULM — New Ulm defeated Worthington in a Big South Conference girls’ hockey game on Tuesday.

Maddie O’Connor, Julia Helget, Morgan Klein, Jada Rahe, Molly Scheid, Emma Brudelie, and Jayda Helget all scored a goal for New Ulm.
