Scheffler, Munoz, Mans lead All-Journal offense

Decker Scheffler, QB, Springfield, Sr.

Scheffler finished his 2019 season by helping take Springfield back to the state tournament for the second year in a row. The Tigers went 10-1 in 2019 as the dual-threat senior quarterback completed 170 passes for 2,000 yards and 25 touchdowns. Scheffler also ran for 537 yards and five touchdowns.

Scheffler also caught two passes for a touchdown this season. The standout athlete and All-District player finished his career on the Tigers’ football team with 5,488 yards passing, 410 completions and 57 touchdown passes. Head coach Bob Fink said that Scheffler was a leader on the offense the past two years and an outstanding athlete with a big-time arm.

JC Munoz, RB, GFW, Sr.

Munoz rushed for 1,171 yards and 16 touchdowns this season on 96 carries to help lead the Thunderbirds to their best season in years. With Munoz’s 12.2 yards per carry, the Thunderbirds finished 9-3 and made it back to state for the first time since 2009 after picking up a trio of playoff wins over Cleveland (56-6), Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (46-44) and United South Central (48-26).

Munoz was also one of the team’s top defenders this year and had 65 solo tackles. The three-time All-District player ends his career with 3,411 yards rushing and 44 touchdowns.

Jon Mans, QB,

Nicollet, Sr.

Mans ended his senior year at Nicollet passing for 1,820 yards on 153 completions. He threw for 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions while also rushing for 835 yards and 14 touchdowns on 122 carries.

Mans’ 2,655 total yards of offense got him All-District honors and led the 9-2 Raiders to a Section 2, 9-man runner-up finish. He ends his career with 333 completions for 3,876 yards, 45 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. The two-year starting quarterback also finishes with 1,296 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns on 262 carries.

Cole Ranweiler, RB,

New Ulm, Jr.

Ranweiler ended his season with 193 carries for 1,276 yards and 13 touchdowns. The 6.6 yards-per-carry rusher led the district in rushing and was named an All-District player. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Avery Northquest, RB, Nicollet, Sr.

Northquest, a back-to-back All-District player and four-year starter, finished his senior year with 1,102 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on 133 carries. He also caught 13 passes for 163 yards and four touchdowns to help lead the Raiders to a 9-2 season and a runner-up finish in the Section 2, 9-man finals game.

Northquest was described by Nicollet head coach Tom Murphy as being easily the most physical player on the team. A late ankle injury in the season forced Northquest to nose tackle without any carries, but the 190-pound halfback still finished the year with more than 1,000 yards on the ground.

Evan Martin, RB,

GFW, Sr.

Martin rushed for 895 yards and 11 touchdowns on 102 carries this year for Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop. He averaged 9.2 yards per carry and also caught four passes for 140 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He played quarterback as a sophomore and junior before becoming a running back his senior year.

The 2019 All-District player ends his career with 1,238 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns.

Dominic Henrichs, RB, GFW, Jr.

Henrichs rushed for 800 yards and 12 touchdowns on 71 carries this year for an 11.3 yards per carry average. He also had 457 kick-return yards and one for a touchdown and finished with 1,237 all-purpose yards. Henrichs finished the year as an honorable mention by the district.

Jace Marotz, WR,

MVL, Sr.

Marotz was a big target for the Chargers this season and pulled in 40 receptions for 501 yards and six touchdowns. The All-District player and team captain developed into one of the area’s top receivers in 2019 with improved route running and ability to find the end zone.

Marotz also played well on the other side of the ball with a little less than 100 tackles and eight sacks.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran head coach Jim Buboltz said that Marotz embraced the game of football this season along with his weight room training and that MVL was honored to have had the opportunity to coach Marotz.

Marotz ended his career with 69 catches for 915 yards and six touchdowns.

Nolan Hovland, WR, Springfield, Sr.

Hovland led the Tigers with 40 catches for 513 yards and six touchdowns. He was also one of the Tigers’ top blockers for the running game through the hole. He also was named an All-District player this year. Springfield head coach Bob Fink said that Hovland was a very smart football player that did it all for the team on both sides of the ball.

Kadin Johnson, RB, Springfield, Jr.

Johnson rushed for 726 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 80 carries for 9.2 yards per carry this season. He was an honorable mention in the district this year. Tigers head coach Bob Fink said that Johnson had a very good year on both sides of the ball and the staff is expecting big things from him next year.

Ethan Arndt, QB, Madelia, Jr.

Arndt led the Madelia offense in several categories this year, passing for 1,270 yards and 12 touchdowns on 77 completions while also rushing for 821 yards an six touchdowns on 115 carries. Madelia head coach Nick Willaert called Arndt an excellent leader for the Blackhawks this season in his first year as a full-time quarterback.
