Collum, Hovland, Rummel highlight All-Journal defense

Colton Collum, LB,

MVL, Sr.

Collum passed his 127 total tackles last season with 137 total tackles this year for the Chargers. The 190-pound linebacker also had five sacks and three fumble recoveries this year and was an All-District selection.

The senior also set the school record for career tackles with 422 this season, passing Jon Beilke’s 397 total tackles from 1997-2001.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran head coach Jim Buboltz said that Collum was a tireless worker in the weight room and on the practice field and that led him to a fabulous year and career on both sides of the ball. The Chargers will have big shoes to fill next season in Collum’s absence.

Ivan Hovland, LB,

Springfield, Sr.

Hovland ended the season leading all Tiger tacklers with 118 total tackles. He had 34 solo tackles and 84 assists and was a three-year starter for Springfield. For his career, Hovland tallied 403 total tackles and was named an All-District player this year.

Springfield head coach Bob Fink said that Hovland had a tremendous high school football career, had a great nose for the football and was a punishing tackler.

Mason Rummel, LB, Springfield, Sr.

Rummel was a two-way player for the Tigers this year that excelled at middle linebacker and running back. He had 24 solo tackles and 76 assists this year for 100 total tackles. He also ran for 741 yards and 11 touchdowns on offense and was named the Southwest District, East Subdistrict MVP.

Springfield head coach Bob Fink said that Rummel was a physical football player that loved to make tackles and played the game with great passion.

Riley Hulke, DB,

Nicollet, Sr.

Hulke finished his senior year with nine interceptions and a fumble recovery for the 9-2 Raiders that finished second in the Section 2, 9-man playoffs. He also had 24 total tackles and with his nine interceptions, became the school-record holder for career interceptions with 19.

The All-District player and two-year starter ends his career with 55 total tackles and three fumble recoveries.

Curtis Tauer, DL,

Springfield, Sr.

Tauer, a three-year starter for Springfield, was an anchor on the defensive line for the Tigers this year and ended the season as an All-District player. He had 52 total tackles and six sacks and also played on the offensive line.

He missed the Tigers’ state playoff game with Blooming Prairie due to a knee injury and only played briefly in the prior two Springfield playoff games, but Tauer still made his impact known all season.

Springfield head coach Bob Fink described Tauer as dominant on both sides of the ball and said that teams avoided running the ball to his side of the field.

Chris Knowles, DE, Cathedral, Sr.

Knowles ended his senior year, his first at defensive end, with 77 total tackles, 44 solo. He also had an interception return for a touchdown, four blocked passes, five forced fumbles and five sacks.

Knowles was also named an All-District player this year.

Teagan Kamm, S,

New Ulm, Sr.

Kamm led the Eagles in total tackles this year with 108. He also added an interception for the 3-6 Eagles.

Lance Wagner, MLB, Wabasso, Sr.

Wagner finished his senior year with the 7-3 Rabbits by collecting 72 total tackles, 34 solo and seven for a loss. He also had three interceptions and a sack.

Colby Wall, S,

Wabasso, Jr.

Wall picked off eight passes this year for Wabasso and forced two fumbles as a starting safety. He also piled up 70 total tackles, 39 solo, and broke up 17 passes.

Hunter Hulke, C/LB,

New Ulm, Sr.

Hulke finished the season with 94 total tackles for the Eagles. He also had four sacks and a fumble recovery.

Ben Radke, DL,

Nicollet, Sr.

Radke, described by Nicollet head coach Tom Murphy as the team’s “swiss army knife” for his time on offensive line, at tight end and on the defensive line, finished the season with 67 total tackles, 39 solo, a sack and a fumble recovery. He was limited after suffering a Week 6 ankle injury, but came back strong in the playoffs to help lead the Raiders to their 15th section finals appearance in school history. The All-District player finishes his career with 181 total tackles, 3 1/2 sacks, an interception, three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.
