Kren, Otto Named UMAC Players of the Week

NEW ULM — Two Martin Luther College football players won Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances in Saturday’s regular season finale at Crown College. Running back Joshuah Kren was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Micah Otto won Special Teams Player of the Week.

Kren won the honor on offense for the second time this season after rushing nine times for 214 yards (23.8 yards per carry) and two touchdowns in Saturday’s 53-20 win. He also caught one pass for a 26-yard touchdown to bring his total all-purpose yards from scrimmage to 240 on only 10 touches. Along with his touchdown reception, his two rushing scores went for 70 (opening play of the game) and 54 yards, giving him eight touchdowns (five rushing, three receiving) this season of at least 50 yards.

Kren’s big day gave him 1,010 yards rushing, making he and Austin DeNoyer the first pair of teammates to rush for at least 1,000 yards in the same season in program history. Kren also broke DeNoyer’s single-season record for all-purpose yards from scrimmage with 1,484. He also leads the UMAC in that statistic this season, as as well as in both rushing touchdowns (13) and total touchdowns (19).

Otto’s special teams honor was his fourth this season. His performance in the win over the Storm included a pair of field goals (44 and 45 yards) that set a new career long. He also went 4-4 on extra point attempts, averaged 42.5 yards per punt, and averaged 55.9 yards on seven kickoffs, including one that went into the end zone for a touchback.

This season, Otto has made five of his seven field goal attempts, and also has made 20 consecutive extra point attempts over the past five games.

The Knights will return to action when they play their first round game of the NCAA Division III Football Championships at Wheaton (Ill.) on Saturday, November 23, at 12 p.m.
