Roundup: New Ulm tennis team picks up a victory over Maple River

MAPLETON — New Ulm defeated Maple River 4-3 on Thursday in a girls’ tennis match.

For New Ulm, Abby Hietala won at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2, Malia Emerson won at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-0, Lydia King won at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2 and Katie Wilker and Ivy Benson won at No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-3.

St. Mary’s 3, CM 0

MORGAN — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept Cedar Mountain 25-9, 25-12, 25-15 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

St. Mary’s was led by Madison Mathiowetz, who had eight kills and 18 digs and Bella Hoffmann, who had four aces seven digs and 16 set assists.

Nadia Meyers had seven kills, five assists, five digs, and three blocks for Cedar Mountain, while Morgan Engholm had 41 digs. Also for the Cougars, Teresa Larsen and Hailey Hollar had four kills each. Hollar also had 21 digs.

St. Mary’s hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

GFW 3, BLHS 0

HECTOR — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop swept Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 25-23, 25-19, 25-13 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Shelby Ramirez had 13 kills, two blocks and four aces for GFW. Also for GFW, Hannah Panitzke had eight kills and 10 digs, Brynn Busse had 20 set assists and 12 digs and Kaity Lee hyad 19 digs.

BLHS was led by Sara Kottke, who had 12 kills, two blocks and two digs. Also for BLHS, Allison Dornseif had one kill, 13 set assists and two digs, Marissa Ebbers had five kills and 12 digs and Katie Buboltz had 14 digs.

GFW plays at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s.

Sleepy Eye 1

SLEEPY EYE — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Sleepy Eye 25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 25-22 on Thursday night in Tomahawk Conference Volleyball action.

The Indians were led by Brittney Dittbenner, who had 10 kills, 14 digs and four ace serves, while McKenna Strong added 10 digs and a pair of blocks. Also for Sleepy Eye, Alexa Steffl had seven kills and 12 digs, while Sandy Flores had 24 set assists and 16 digs.

Cathedral’s Emily Schommer had five ace serves to go with a career and season best 50 set assists, while Maggie Fliszar had 24 kills and 21 digs, both career and season highs.

Lily Franta had 10 kills and 17 digs also for the Greyhounds, while Megan Haala had 12 kills and 11 digs.

Cathedral (10-9) hosts Springfield at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye next plays at the Nicollet Tournament Saturday, while Cathedral hosts Springfield on Tuesday.

NYA 3, Sibley East 0

ARLINGTON — Norwood-Young America swept Sibley East 25-13, 25-21, 25-12 on Thursday in Minnesota River Conference volleyball action.

The Wolverines were led by McKenna Kranz’s 13 set assists and five digs, while Shanise Bates had six kills, five digs and three ace serves. Maddi Tuchtenhagen and Ellie Harens each had five kills for Sibley East also, while Hannah Ebert had six digs and an ace serve.

Sibley East (6-11, 0-4) hosts Tri-City United on Tuesday.

Nicollet 3, ML/GHEC/T 0

NICOLLET — Nicollet swept Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 25-18, 25-21, 28-26 on Thursday in Valley Conference volleyball action.

Jill Thompson had 15 kills, 15 digs and seven ace serves for the Raiders, while Jackie Thompson had 12 set assists and three ace serves. Ruby Hoffman added three ace serves and 11 digs for Nicollet, while Haley Stoecker had six kills and Marah Hulke had four blocks.

Nicollet has a home tournament Saturday.

Cleveland 3, Madelia 0

MADELIA — Cleveland defeated Madelia 25-15, 25-7, 25-9 on Thursday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Madelia’s Brooke Lensing had one ace, five kills and two blocks, Jovanna Cortez had two kills and four digs and Malia Schwanke had seven digs.

Madelia plays at 7 p.m. on Thursday at St. Clair.

Girls’ soccer

New Ulm 4, Marshall 0

MARSHALL — New Ulm defeated Marhsall 4-0 on Thursday in a Big South Conference girls’ soccer game on Thursday.

New Ulm had 35 shots on goal. New Ulm’s goals were scored by Hannah Osborne, Bryn Nesvold, Paige Kalis and Jessica Moellenhoff.

Kendra Nesvold had one save for New Ulm.

New Ulm (9-4-1) plays at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Worthington.

GFW, MVL compete at Redwood Valley

Cross-Country Invite

REDWOOD FALLS — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop’s Grace Feder finished first in the girls’ 5k Run on Thursday, finishing with a time of 19:29.

Also for GFW, Eliza Koroleva finished seventh with a time of 21:29. GFW finished third overall as a team.

For Minnesota Valley Lutheran, Naomia Anderson finished 13th with a time of 22:03, while Anna VanRiesen took 29th with a time of 23:46.
