Waseca 4, New Ulm 3

NEW ULM — Waseca took three of four matches in the singles competition and escaped with a 4-3 Big South Conference girls’ tennis victory against New Ulm on Tuesday.

New Ulm got a 6-3, 6-1 victory from Malia Emerson at No. 3 singles.

New Ulm also got a victory from its No. 2 doubles team of Lauren Mages and Ellie Wilker (6-3, 6-4) and its No. 3 doubles team of Neveah Ubl and Emily Guggisberg (6-1, 6-1).

At first singles, Makiah Otto lost 6-3, 6-1 and Abby Hietala lost 6-3, 5-7, 10-5 at No. 2 singles. Lydia King fell to Sarah Robbins 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

The New Ulm No. 1 doubles team of Bethany Janssen and Gabby Sammons lost 6-3, 6-1.

New Ulm competes at Blue Earth Area on Thursday for another Big South Conference battle.

Prep volleyball

New Ulm 3, Fairmont 0

FAIRMONT — New Ulm defeated Fairmont 25-16, 25-21, 25-17 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference volleyball match.

Talya Hoel led New Ulm with seven kills, 10 set assists, one ace and six digs. Also for New Ulm, Matalie Yackley had four kills, 14 set assists, one ace and four digs, Nora Windschill had 13 kills and seven digs and Ally Steffensmeier had five kills and five digs.

New Ulm, (6-5, 5-0) hosts Waseca at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Nicollet 3, Madelia 1

MADELIA — Nicollet defeated Madelia 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19 on Tuesday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Nicollet’s Jill Thompson had 21 kills and three blocks, Tayler Johnson had eight digs and Marah Hulke had 19 set assists.

Emily Stevenson led Madelia with three aces, four kills, eight digs and 20 set assists. Also for Madelia, Brooke Lensing had five aces, four kills and two blocks and Lillian Maul had three kills and 11 digs.

Nicollet plays at 7 p.m. on Thursday at St. Clair. Madelia hosts Mankato Loyola at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Springfield 3, St. Mary’s 2

SLEEPY EYE — Springfield defeated Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 18-25, 25-23, 25-12, 24-26, 15-11 on Tuesday in nonconference volleyball action.

Springfield was led by Eva Mark, who had 43 set assists and 15 digs. Also for Springfield, Kora Wahl had 14 kills, five blocks and 17 digs, Cylee Graff had 21 kills and 17 digs, Anna Mattson had seven kills and five digs and Maddy Digmann had 18 digs.

No stats were submitted by St. Mary’s.

Springfield (5-6, 0-2) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Paynesville 3, BLHS 1

HECTOR — Paynesville defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 25-22 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.

BLHS was led by Allison Dornseif, who had one kill, 21 set assists, two blocks and four digs. Also for BLHS, Katie Buboltz had 24 digs, Marissa Ebbers had four kills, one block and 15 digs and Sara Kottke had one ace, 11 kills, four blocks and five digs.

BLHS plays at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Springfield.

Jordan 3, Sibley East 0

ARLINGTON — Jordan defeated Sibley East 25-15, 25-20, 25-18 on Tuesday in nonconference volleyball action.

Ellie Hardens led Sibley East with 11 set assists, four kills and one ace. Also for Sibley East, Shanise Bates had seven kills and six digs and Arayah St. John had eight digs and three kills.

Sibley East (4-6, 0-2) plays at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Belle Plaine.

Girls’ soccer

Fairmont 2, New Ulm

FAIRMONT — Fairmont edged New Ulm 2-1 on Tuesday night in Big South Conference girls’ soccer action.

Fairmont added a goal with 1:42 left in the first half before adding its second goal of the night 13 minutes into the second half for an early 2-0 lead.

The Eagles got an unassisted goal by Madison Roufs in the 55th minute to trail 2-1, but New Ulm was unable to add another late.

The Eagles had 18 shots on goal.

New Ulm (5-4-1, 3-3-1) hosts Waseca on Thursday.
