MLC women’s soccer team defeats Mount Mary

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College women’s soccer team dominated from start to finish in a 4-0 win over Mount Mary on Friday.

The Knights outshot the Blue Angels 43-1 for the game and recorded a pair of goals in each half on the way to the win.

Lydia Bitter and Tabitha Vannieuwenhoven accounted for the two first-half tallies off assists from Carissa Friebe and Abby Enstad, while Emily Witkowski and Bitter each scored once in the second half, with Avery Broyles adding an assist on the final goal.

The goals from Witkowski and Bitter were their second of their season, while Vannieuwenhoven scored the first of her MLC career.

Broyles, Bitter and Witkowski each finished with seven total shots, with Bitter taking a team-best five shots on goal.

The defense was rarely challenged, but kept keeper Mollie Fischer in line for her second consecutive shutout (and third of her career).

Men’s soccer

WAUKESHA, Wis. — The MLC men’s soccer team dropped the first of two games on a weekend trip in Wisconsin at Carroll University by the score of 5-1 on Friday.

The Knights fell behind 2-0 early, but the cut the deficit in half thanks to a penalty kick goal by Nate Lemke in the 29th minute.

The deficit remained at one until the 73rd minute, when Carroll scored the first of three goals in an eight-minute span that put the game away.

Josiah Mittelstadt finished with nine saves out of the 14 shots he faced in goal for MLC.

Volleyball

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The MLC volleyball team lost both its matches at the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament hosted by UW-Eau Claire on Friday. The Knights lost 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) to Lakeland to start the tournament, and followed that with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-19) defeat to Linfield in the night cap.

Lakeland 3, MLC 0

Kati Aguilar led the MLC attack with nine kills, while Hannah Willems added five kills without an error for a .625 attack efficiency.

Kate Aswege led the Knights with 15 digs. Jewel St. Germaine recorded a team-best 16 assists.

Linfield 3, MLC 0

Aguilar led all MLC hitters with four kills, while Aswege once again led in digs with 14 for the match.

MLC fell to 1-10 on the season following the two defeats. The Knights will return to action on Monday, September 16, when they host Crown College in a non-conference match. That match will start at 7 p.m.
