6-run 5th leads Longhorns by Lakers

HANSKA — Led by a six-run fifth inning, including a three-run homer by Jake Mangen, the Stark Longhorns took down the Hanska Lakers 8-6 on Saturday afternoon on the first day of Region 2C amateur baseball playoff action.

Dusty Mangen drove in a three-run double in the fifth also to help lead the way for Stark. Jon Kopacek pitched eight innings for Stark in the win, giving up 12 hits and four walks for four earned runs. Alex Jay got the save for Stark, striking out three and giving up one hit.

Cole Wellmann took the loss for Hanska in 4 2/3 innings of work, giving up 10 hits and three walks for seven earned runs.

Stark was led at the plate by Zach Haala, who was 3 for 5, while Jake Mangen ended the day 2 for 3 with four RBIs. Nick Labat, Dusty Mangen, Sean Mathiowetz and Brandon Helget all had two hits apiece for Stark, with Dusty Mangen also driving in three runs.

Hanska was led by Kevin Larson’s 3-for-3 game, while Wellmann was 3 for 4 with a solo homer. Gary Wilfahrt Jr., Derek Wilfahrt and Brady Mosenden also had two hits apiece for the Lakers.

Stark hosts New Ulm at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in 2C playoff action, while Hanska travels to Lamberton for a 4:30 p.m. 2C playoff game Sunday.
