History overreach?

To the editor: To recently read that our Minnesota Legislature has used their powers to change ISD 88 mascot name, not to mention the city name has my mind boggled. A can of worms has (now) been opened as Minnesota has numerous towns named after their origin, by indigenous native people. Examples: Minnetonka, Wabasso, Winnebago, Shakopee, Wabasha, etc. This trend of erasing sacred history, the origin of individual areas by those who were first living here is laughable. History is to be respected, learned from and held dearly. Chief Sleepy Eyes (yes EYES) was his given name. On the ...

Brink of chip war?

To the editor: The majority of chips are made in Taiwan and the balance in China. China wants to rule the world in every way and are preparing to take over Taiwan, thus will control all the chip production to the world to truly be “the ruler” of the world. Everything with an on/off switch now takes a chip, be it your car, coffeemaker or all our military gear and jets. The U.S. economy is at the mercy of all the chip plants overseas as the U.S. has no such production. Any evil dictator such as China, can destroy the U.S. totally without firing a weapon simply by cutting all ...

Farewell, Sleepy Eye!

To the editor: The 2023 session of the Minnesota Legislature has done many wonderful things, but one decision it has made is more far-reaching than it contemplated. It has used its vast powers to keep ISD 84 students from cheering for the Sleepy Eye Indians. Under the new broadly-worded law, not only is the term “Indians” banned as a team name, but the name or image of any American Indian individual, custom or tradition may not be used on the logo, letterhead or as a team name of any public school or school district. So not only will ISD 84 students not be able to cheer for the ...

Never leave the memories of our soldiers behind

It’s been said that a nation that forgets its defenders will itself be forgotten. We tell the world who we are as a country by how we come together to remember and honor our fallen heroes on Memorial Day — and every day. So many Americans have put themselves in harm’s way for our nation. One example is Charles Frances Shepherd, a veteran who fought in World War I as part of the Meuse Argonne Offensive in France. On November 5th, 1918, Charles’ squadron was spotted by the German Army, and bombs began to fall. One got too close, injuring the corporal of his squadron. Refusing ...

Wear green for Mental Health Awareness

To the editor: One in five Americans live with a mental health condition at some point throughout their life. Most people live with the symptoms of a mental illness for ten years before seeking treatment, largely due to the stigma. The sooner people get treatment, the greater their chances of recovery. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which makes it the perfect time to spread the word that mental health is as important as our physical health. The Heart of New Ulm Project’s (HONU) Brown County Mental Health and Wellness action team are part of a local effort to stop the silence ...

Some sources of reassurance

To the editor: As reported on page 4A of the April 24 Journal, a number of area young people mentioned “global warming” or “climate change” in responding to the question: “What is your biggest concern about the earth?” Books that could serve to offer reassurance and counteract unwarranted fear include: The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism, by Christopher Horner; The Politically Incorrect Guide to Climate Change, by Mark Morano; Apocalypse Never, by Michael Shellenberger; Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom, by Patrick ...
