Backer has energy, creativity to be mayor

To the editor: I am writing to encourage folks in New Ulm to vote for Kathleen Backer to become the next mayor of New Ulm. Shortly after I moved to New Ulm just over 20 years ago I was selected as one of the 24 people in the community to attend the week long Blandin Community Leadership Workshop. It was there that I first met Kathleen Backer, who was also a participant in the program. I was impressed with her energy and creativity as the week progressed and as we were involved in a number of activities to help build our leadership skills. New Ulm needs a mayor who will work hard to ...

As sheriff, Lange brings criminals to justice

To the editor: In November we have an opportunity to cast our vote for Nicollet County sheriff. Not many people you vote for can affect our lives on a daily basis, but your vote to re-elect Sheriff Dave Lange can be a positive way. Dave has had the opportunity to serve and protect us for the past 19 years of which I am grateful to live in a community that I feel safe in. Knowing that Dave also encourages and supports working with and collaborating with surrounding agencies to fight crime and bring drug-related criminals to justice. Working in law enforcement today is difficult and ...

Chadderdon has tenacious drive for justice

To the editor: I am happy to support Nicollet County Sheriff’s Investigator Marc Chadderdon for the position of Nicollet County Sheriff. As an investigator for the New Ulm Police Department, I have worked alongside with Marc for over 28 years in criminal investigations. I have witnessed firsthand, his professionalism, tenacious drive for truth and justice, and empathic and victim service approach to all the people he encounters. Marc is a law enforcement leader who numerous young officers look to for guidance, advise and support. Marc is always willing to take time and help but ...

School district does not support differing views

To the editor: A response from our superintendent of schools was printed the day after another letter pointed out that incumbents running for School Board have failed to answer a question directly asked of them. Superintendent Bertrang assured us that he (and we can assume he means also the board with which he works) recognize their responsibility to “make sure all students have…supports necessary to be successful in school.” Everyone sees that as a laudable goal. Assurance was given that “we are not teaching classes such as critical race theory and LGTBQ+.” That’s good ...

CTE classes benefit area’s economy

To the editor: Is Nov. 8 important enough for the future of our community, our students and our business? New Ulm’s career and technical education class offerings are advanced welding, milling, manufacturing, advanced small gas engine/ATV repair, advanced cabinetry, automotive/auto body and carpentry. Last year, more than 120 students took CTE Center classes. Many students who took CTE classes have entered the local workforce, filling jobs in small gas engine repair, welding fabrication, carpentry, and graphic arts. Several others continued on to technical schools to be welders, ...

Backer will sing community’s praises

To the editor: We have an opportunity coming up by choosing a mayor to help lead our city into the future and to represent us at various city events. Although the role of mayor is mostly ceremonial, perception in today’s world can make big differences. We‘ve known and observed Kathleen Backer in her many leadership roles over 40-some years in New Ulm. We can not imagine anyone better prepared to sing the praises of our community. She has demonstrated organizational skills as well as excellent communication abilities! Ever heard of the Brown County Historical Society? Anyway, we ...
