Reannouncing retirement; supporting Ullery

2 min read

My name's Larry Mack, and since 2015, I have proudly served as the city councilor for New Ulm's Ward 4. Over the past 12 years, I've worked with my colleagues to put the best interests of the community first, from helping to steer the Reinvest New Ulm (RENU) project and complete the city's 20-year comprehensive plan to supporting businesses and growing workforce housing options.

This past January, I decided to retire from my position as councilor at the end of my current term. Other individuals were expressing interest in running for the Ward 4 seat, and I felt it was time to see what someone else could bring to it.

The Journal officially announced my retirement on May 22, a few days after the filing period opened. Unfortunately, when filing closed on June 2, no one had come forward, which meant no names would appear on November's Ward 4 ballot. The election would be decided by write-in vote.

Several people contacted me, worried about who would represent them once I retired, so I said I would serve another -- fourth term if written in. I felt I owed my constituents reassurance that they wouldn't be left without the kind of representation they'd come to expect over the past 12 years.

A couple weeks ago, Sue Ullery officially announced her candidacy for the Ward 4 seat. Although I didn't know her, I applauded her willingness to step up. Since then, I've spoken with Sue, learned about her past experiences and qualifications to serve, and have come to understand that our vision and goals for the city are very much alike. Sue is energetic, genuine, thoughtful, and strongly committed to the New Ulm community. I believe she would be an approachable, responsive representative.

As a result, I am reannouncing my retirement and giving Sue Ullery my endorsement for Ward 4 city councilor. I ask that voters write in her name on the ballot. I'm confident she will serve the community well.

Ward 4, it's been an honor to represent you. (And to any of you who may have already voted early and written in my name, thank you. I appreciate your support.)

Larry A. Mack,

New Ulm
