In the movie, The Odessey, the hero Odysseus must sail past the two most evil Goddesses in Greek mythology. On one shore is Scylla, represented by sharp immovable rocks and a six-headed man-eating monster, while on the opposing shore is Charybdis who is portrayed as a violent whirlpool who will suck everybody in and kill them. The similarities between these two
Goddesses and our modern political system is unnerving. I see Scylla, and her sharp rocks as representing Republican conservatism while Charybdis is shown a whirlpool similar to liberal Democrats. Isn't it crazy that American politicians have chosen to model our two political parties after the two worst monster Goddesses in Greek mythology.
What if America's political system had chosen to model itself after the two good Greek Goddesses of wisdom, Sophia, on one side, and Aphrodite, the Goddess of beauty on the other. This division is totally consistent with the two hemispheres of the human brain where modern neurological studies have shown how the left hemisphere sees the world in terms of truth while the right sees it in terms of beauty.
What kind of world would we have if our political leaders saw everything as being either true or beautiful? Oh, but to dream that such a fate should befall us. And so, we plod along in our current state of misery on the verge of war and depression while none of our leaders seem capable of understanding or solving the myriad problems that currently beset us.
