Learn more about me and other candidates

To the editor:

My name is Sarah Leslie and I am running for ISD #88 School Board. I attended New Ulm Public Schools from K-12 and returned to the community following graduate school. My husband Greg and I have two children and a niece attending New Ulm Public Schools so I have a vested interest in the quality of their education. But it isn’t just about my kids, I believe our school district must provide a high-quality, equitable education for every child, and I am committed to ensuring that all students can thrive in our schools. That means robust special education, enrichment classes, College in the Schools, fine arts, Career Technical Education, and athletics.

I served on the District Curriculum Advisory Committee (DCAC) for two years where I learned how state standards are implemented, curricula are chosen, and student success is evaluated and reported. I was a Friends of ISD #88 Referendum Committee member in 2022 and worked to provide awareness and education to voters – who overwhelmingly voted to continue important funding for our schools. I am on the Heart of New Ulm Leadership Team and as part of that, I am involved in the Safe Routes to Schools Action Team. This Team works with all New Ulm schools to promote biking and walking, educate students on pedestrian and rider safety, and improve traffic safety around our schools.

My priorities include advocating for resources that enhance classroom learning, ensuring our schools are safe and welcoming for all students, and fostering open communication between the school board, parents, teachers, and the community. The role of the school board is to support district staff in their mission of providing a quality education and experience. The student needs to be at the center of everything we do and I believe that by working together, we can create an education system that maximizes the potential of every child.
