A plea to Republicans

To the Editor:

Even though the former President has tried to distance himself from Project 2025 and the Heritage Foundation, the worse threat is the manifesto that they have clandestinely mustered and remastered while the former President is performing his Wizard of Oz-like distraction in plain sight. Actually, this group’s “Mandate for Leadership” has been around since the Reagan era. I’ve heard only some of the policies that these radicals are proposing, and it scares me to think of the future these Christian Nationalists want to impose upon anyone that doesn’t fit their paradigm for America.

I saw the signs for deportation at the RNC convention. Maybe they’ve got other plans to purge more undesirables from our population. My sister-in-law recently witnessed a World War II, Japanese internment camp near Cody, Wyoming. Wouldn’t that be an overreaction worthy of people on the Right that would like to “Take America Back(ward)”? It’s bad enough worrying about the threat of the former President back in the White House. It’s horrifying to think what’s in the cards for my grandchildren and other young people who might be square pegs that don’t always fit into the round holes of Project 2025’s all-inclusive, Stepford-wife-like utopia that is not what we’ve come to love about the United States.

I’ve got a sister-in-law who got married when she was five months pregnant. She eventually had three sons, sandwiched around a miscarriage, and stuck in an abusive marriage. After nine long years, she divorced to escape with her life. That would run afoul of what the right’s vice-presidential candidate has advocated. (Whatever happened to “husbands, love your wives”? Ephesians 5:25) Mercifully, it’s turned out very well for her and her sons.

I attended a meeting recently when an elderly attendee, who in lauding the greatness of having grown up in the era shared by most of those in attendance stated, “We didn’t have all this trans crap.” Maybe it’s to be expected from “men of a certain age.” I’m not surprised to hear it, but I don’t have to accept it. Once again I beg for Republicans with any level of discernment and disgust for the former President and his MAGA zealot JD Vance, please vote for the Democrats. Pay attention. Don’t just believe me. Listen intelligently for the next 80+ days. Our democracy is depending on us.
