About Critical Race Theory

To the editor:

Based on my own research, I am very skeptical of Dr. Johnson’s reassurances about Critical Race Theory. I suggest people read up on the subject and come to their own conclusions. To get started, here are quotes from three prominent CRT proponents that plainly contradict the professor’s rosy picture.

• “… a positive white identity is an impossible goal. White identity is inherently racist; white people do not exist outside the system of white supremacy.” From “White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism,” by Robin DiAngelo, p. 149.

• “The only remedy to racist discrimination is antiracist discrimination. The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination. The only remedy to present discrimination is future discrimination.” From “How to Be an Antiracist,” by Ibram X. Kendi, p. 19.

• “Unlike traditional approaches to civil rights, which favor incrementalism and step-by-step progress, critical race theory calls into question the very foundation of the liberal order, including equality theory, legal reasoning, Enlightenment rationalism, and the neutral principles of constitutional law.” From “Critical Race Theory: An Introduction,” first edition (2001), by Richard Delgado and Jean Stefancic, p. 3.

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
