THUMBS UP Local groups helping hurricane relief efforts The southeast United States has been devastated by hurricanes this fall season. This year is especially bad with multiple hurricanes hitting in quick succession. Fortunately, local groups are helping in this crisis. This last week a J & R Schugel semi-trailer parked in a New Ulm Public Utilities lot was loaded with household items for donation to those impacted by the storms in rural North Carolina. THUMBS UP Oktoberfest is back October is here and that means New Ulm is ready to celebrate Oktoberfest. For the first weekend, the fun will be centered around downtown New Ulm. As with last year, a green artificial turf will be placed on Minnesota Street. There will be an increase in food vendors downtown. THUMBS UP New community collage installed on Center Street Thursday, the Community Collage featuring hundreds of photos was hung on the side of the Thimble Box building at 2. S. Minnesota Street. The collage was created through a collaboration with The Downtown Action Team, New Ulm Chamber and photographer Josh Madson. Last April, Madson held a photo shoot with the public at Sweet Haven Tonics. More than 400 individuals and groups took part in the photo shoot to create the collage. THUMBS UP International cooperation with Aachen delegation The recent visit of the Aachen, Germany delegation to New Ulm is a reminder of the benefit of different governments cooperating with one another. The purpose of the delegation’s visit was to discuss common interests between the south central region of Minnesota and the Aachen region of Germany. The two regions are half a world apart, but share many of the same strengths and goals. Thursday’s visit to New Ulm highlighted a shared interest in emergency management. THUMBS UP Hermannfest: New Ulm’s most unique festival is back This Saturday New Ulm celebrates Hermannfest, which is possibly the most unique of all New Ulm festivals. The annual festival commemorates Arminius’ (Hermann’s) victory against three Roman legions at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest. The battle took place Sept. 8-11 in CE 9. The festival takes place in the shadow of Hermann Monument, honoring the man who united the Germanic people against the Romans. THUMBS UP Street Department quickly cleans up storm debris Thursday afternoon’s storm hit hard and fast, leaving debris scattered throughout New Ulm. There were few sections of the city without a down tree or branch laying in the road. Fortunately, the streets were not blocked for long. Much of the big debris was removed quickly. New Ulm Street Department started clearing fallen tree limbs from the street before the storm was fully over. It was an impressive and efficient operation by city work crews.
