Deer Hunt Opener looks good

Minnesota's firearms deer hunting season opens this Saturday. More than 400,000 hunters are anticipated to participate in the deer hunt opener. The hunting should be good in southern Minnesota, with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reporting deer populations at stable or increasing. This is partially due to last year's mild winter. Hunting conditions should be favorable. The forecast for New Ulm is sunny with temperatures between 40-55 degrees.

Shoppers to head out looking for deals

As the area deer hunters prepare to head out in the woods to bag a deer, non-hunters prepare to head out to the store to bag great holiday deals during New Ulm's Shopping Opener. The Shopping Opener is an annual tradition in New Ulm that has been held in conjunction with the deer hunt opener for decades. Many of New Ulm's stores will offer special holiday sales throughout the weekend, but the Shopping Opener also includes the return of the GnomeMade Market, which includes several open house craft sales at participating homes and businesses throughout New Ulm. This year, 15 historic unique locations are featured on the GnomeMade Market. On Saturday, Jefferson Elementary will host the Women's Expo and Craft Fair.
