Brown County seeks moratorium on data centers

Brown County's Board of Commissioners has set a public hearing on Tuesday, Nov. 17 to establish an interim ordinance placing a moratorium in Brown County's unincorporated areas. This would place a one-year block on any data centers looking to be established in Brown County. The moratorium is not about the merits of data centers. It is about making sure the county has appropriate regulations in place if and when developers decide to bring one to Brown County. The push for data centers is still relatively new and Minnesota has few state laws addressing their development. It is a wise precaution to pause data center development until the county can develop policy surrounding them. This way, the county does not need to create policy and procedure as they go along.

New Ulm works to update old legal land status

Earlier this week, the City of New Ulm authorized a request to the State of Minnesota Office of the Attorney General to clear a property title from 1862. A piece of property at the intersection of Highland Avenue and KC Road has been owned by New Ulm for over 150 years, but the land has never been developed because a trust on the property restricts it as land for a hospital. In 1862, the parcel of land may have seemed like a perfect spot for a hospital, but as of 2026, it is clear that no hospital could or should be built at this site. The trust no longer makes sense and New Ulm is correct to request the title be cleared. If successful, the land could be developed for residential housing. Currently, the property is surrounded by residential housing. This would be a great fit for the land and would benefit a community with housing needs.

Timberwolves off to a good start

The Minnesota Timberwolves won their 2026-27 season opener 131-106 over the Miami Heat on Wednesday. Anthony Edwards scored 45 points in the game, joining Wilt Chamberlain as the only NBA players to score 40 plus points in consecutive season openers. This is a great start to the Timberwolves' season. The Journal is optimistic about the team's chances this year.
