Rotary Club introduces students to ethics

The New Ulm Rotary Club hosted its Ethics Workshop for area high school students on Tuesday. Rotary has organized the program since 2015 and it remains extremely popular. For many students, the ethics workshop is their first exposure to these concepts. Ethics is a difficult subject to introduce into a school curriculum. It is wonderful that New Ulm's Rotary Club is able to offer this workshop year after year.

Permanent School Trust Fund a benefit for schools

Sleepy Eye Public School is the most recent school in the area to encourage the public to vote "yes" on the ballot amendment asking for an increase on the Minnesota Permanent School Trust Fund. The proposed amendment would change how a $2.3 billion permanent school trust is distributed. School districts would receive extra funding without going back to local tax payers. Sleepy Eye would receive an additional $20,000 in added funding. New Ulm Public Schools would get around $67,000 in additional funding. It is a great deal for schools that are struggling, but it does require voters to approve the ballot issue during the Nov. 3 election.

The cold temperatures arrive

Last Saturday, temperatures reached 89 degrees in New Ulm. That made it one of the warmest Oktoberfests. This Saturday, the high temperature will reach just above 60 degrees. That's a nearly 30 degree swing in temperature over seven days. Even for Minnesota, that is extreme. The only good news is this dramatic drop in temperature might be temporary. The forecast has the temperature climbing back to the 70s later this week. That said, the morning low temperatures will be hovering in the 40s with frost advisories. The warm autumn appears to be over.
