Another N. Korean promise to denuclearize

This week’s summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean Chairman Kim Jong Un contained a lot of good things for Kim. He got a face-to-face meeting with the American president and the recognition of North Korea as a nuclear power that has to be respected on the world stage. He got a promise that the U.S. would end its participation in “provocative” (Trump’s word) military exercises. And his country will get an easing of the economic sanctions his nuclear program has earned.

In exchange, Kim made a promise that North Korea has made before, to end its nuclear program and denuclearize the Korean peninsula. There’s nothing in the summit statement Kim and Trump signed that states how or when this will happen, how it will be overseen or verified.

It will be up to Trump’s intelligence and state department experts to draw up the details that will bring about the promises Kim has agreed to.

It will take some time to find out if this is truly the start of a historic development in U.S.-North Korean relationships, or just another false promise from the North Koreans, who have broken all the others they have made to many U.S. administrations.
