The do’s and don’ts of election disinformation

1 min read

Here are ways that citizens can help to combat voter disinformation:

1. Do verify before you share. Consider the source, check the date, and cross-check the information across outlets.

2. Do question the content. Read past the headline and question emotionally charged content.

3. Do share accurate information. Without mentioning the wrong information, set the record straight by sharing the correct messages.

4. Do report it. Report inaccurate information to social media platforms, group administrators, and election officials.

5. Don't click or share. If you quote the bad information, you help spread it.

6. Don't engage publicly. If someone is sharing bad information, message them privately and ask them to take it down.

7. Do find trusted, non-partisan voting information at VOTE411.org.

Democracy depends on truth. Spreading disinformation destroys democracy.

"Empowering Voters" is a program of the League of Women Voters - New Ulm, a trusted source of nonpartisan voter information, serving New Ulm and the Brown County area to ensure free, fair and safe elections. To learn more, visit newulm.lwv.org or follow our Facebook page.
