100 Women Who Care

THUMBS UP: When ladies get together for lunch, big things can happen. Especially when those ladies are members of 100 Women Who Care. This past week, the New Ulm chapter of 100 Women Who Care held their semi-annual luncheon. These women agree to donate $100 each, and at their lunch they select a worthy cause to receive their $10,000 donation. The group decided to give their grant to Oak Hills Living Center. Oak Hills plans to use the money for programs that enhance the quality of life for their residents, programs that may not be possible under their current financial constraints. This money will make a big difference for the residents of Oak Hills Living Center. Congratulations to the Women Who Care.

Earth Day 2023

THUMBS UP: This is the 53rd anniversary of the first Earth Day. Over the years Earth Day has typically conjured up images of people planting trees. That is a worthwhile thing to do, but today there are so many more concerns. Global warming is being felt these days in undeniable ways, from record heat waves in Europe to rising coastlines to more frequent and more damaging storms. Plastics being discarded into rivers and oceans are starting to clog the oceans, creating garbage patches, including one the size of Texas in the Pacific. Droughts are lasting longer and affecting those in parts of the U.S. that rely on limited sources of water. Earth Day offers us a chance to look at the earth we live on and see what we are doing, and ponder ways we can make a difference.

Fox pays up, Lindell should too

THUMBS DOWN: Fox News settled a defamation suit brought by Dominion Voting Systems, agreeing to pay $787.5 million for its persistent news reports that repeated lies that Dominion voting machines were rigged to throw the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden. Fox is paying up, and now Mike Lindell, the My-Pillow magnate who has also been promoting the idea that the election was stolen from his friend Donald Trump, should pay up too. Lindell, who held a cyber conference in South Dakota in 2021. He offered information that he claimed proved China interfered in the 2020 election, and he offered $5 million to anyone who could disprove his information. When Robert Zeldman of Nevada did disprove it and tried to claim the $5 million, Lindell refused to pay. An arbitrator this week found that Lindell owes Zeldman the $5 million. Lindell should pay up.
