Thumbs Up/Down

Justice is done

THUMBS UP: Kim Potter, the former Brooklyn Center police officer who shot Daunte Wright with her 9mm Glock instead of her Taser, was found guilty on Friday of two counts of manslaughter.

It is not wrong to feel sorry for Potter. Evidence and body camera video show she did had intended to use her Taser and she is most remorseful for the mistake. But a man is dead as a result of her mistake, and it is not enough to say, “I’m sorry.” Her remorse won’t undo her mistake. Nothing will give Daunte Wright. back to his family. Justice demands that Potter be punished.

Christmas challenges

THUMBS DOWN: For the second year in a row COVID-19 is presenting challenges that may keep us from enjoying the Christmas holiday with our loved ones as we would like. The omicron variant is whipping through the populace, and while it appears not to produce as many hospitalizations as the delta variant and the original virus, many families are forgoing their regular gatherings and some churchgoers are staying home or attending services via Facebook or TV.

But remember that the first Christmas had its challenges too. Mary and Joseph were forced to travel while she was with child, they couldn’t find a decent hotel room, and they had to flee into Egypt when Herod tried to eliminate a challenge to his continued rule. All was not calm, at least not all the time.

We wish our readers a Merry Christmas, and a joyful, if challenging, holiday.
