Manchin holds the power in Senate

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, (W-Va) holds the power in the U.S. Senate in regard to the $2 trillion Build Back Better bill that President Joe Biden is hoping to get passed.

To get it through the Senate, which is equally divided between Republicans and Democrats, Biden needs all 50 Democrats to vote “yea”. On Sunday Manchin said that he won’t be doing that for a bill he feels is too expensive and too sweeping.

The White House shot back, with Press Secretary Jen Psaki called Manchin’s statement a “sudden and inexplicable reversal of his position,” and said Manchin had given Biden a written proposal of what he would accept.

The rest of Manchin’s Democratic colleagues are frustrated and angry. The progressives in the party have given up vast portions of the original $3 trillion bill, and they are unlikely to support anything less than what is on the table now.Manchin’s insistence on lowering the cost or cutting back on measures could be the end of the measure entirely.

One vote out of 100 is making all the difference for the Build Back Better proposal. If Biden wants to get any semblance of the bill passed, he needs to satisfy Manchin without turning off any of the progressives who could do exactly the same with one “nay” vote.

Starting at $4.50/week.
