Thumbs Up/Down

Tribute to George

THUMBS UP: George Glotzbach was enthusiastic about a lot of things in New Ulm — he was a big fan of Wanda Gag, of old tyme music and of the city’s German heritage. It was his heritage, after all.

He was especially enthusiastic about the old Middle School building. His father, Linus, was the Works Progress Administration (WPA) administrator in the area, and he was instrumental in getting funding for the addition to the building that is now the State Street Theater, and for the murals that adorn the walls in the theater.

So it is fitting that the State Street Theater Company has dedicated a gallery in its entryway in honor of George and Linus Glotzbach, depicting the history of the building. George would be proud.

No ‘Thank You’?

THUMBS DOWN: Missouri Gov. Mike Parson set a new standard for ingratitude this week after the St. Louis Posst-Dispatch published an article outlining a weakness on a state web site, By right-clicking on the site’s pages, a reporter discovered, one could access information on the credentials and Social Security numbers of nearly 100,000 of the state’s teachers and school officials. The Post-Dispatch informed the state of this weakness in its system, allowing the state to correct it. Only then did the Post-Dispatch publish an article on its findings.

Parson, instead of saying “Thank You!”, announced Thursday he is launching a criminal investigation, alleging that the journalist was a“acting gainst a state agency to compromise teachers’ personal information in an attempt to embarrass the state and sell headlines for their news outlet. We will not let this crime against Missouri teachers go unpunished.”

Three months earlier, the Missouri legislature had passed a bill authorizing a Missouri Cybersecurity Commission. So far Parson has appointed no one to that commission.

If anyone is committing crimes against Missouri teachers, it is state officials who set up the system and refused to do anything to protect it until its weakness was discovered.
