Thumbs Up/Down

Oktoberfest time

THUMBS UP: It’s time for Oktoberfest, and weather willing, it will be a hot time in New Ulm this weekend. Or a cold time. Whatever, it will be a good time.

Head over to Minnesota Street this morning to cheer on the Germanic-American Parade as they go down Minnesota Street to the festival area on Center Street. Then, hang around for some music and refreshment.

Morgan Creek Vineyards is celebrating this event, too, and the festivities will be going strong at the Best Western Plus.

As always, celebrate responsibly.

Remembering George

THUMBS UP: The George Glotzbach Memorial Bicycle Ride is being held today, starting at 9 a.m. at the lower parking lot at German Park. It is a fitting memorial to New Ulm’s good friend, George, who was an avid bicycle rider throughout his life, especially in his later years. We’re sure it helped him live an active, healthy life at an age when most of us are looking for a rocking chair.

COVID news

THUMBS UP: There is some good news and bad news relating to COVID-19 this week. Good news: the death rate seems to be slowing in the U.S. Bad news: we have passed 700,000 deaths. Good news: The pharmaceutical company Merck announced it has a pill it believes will cut the risk of hospitalization and death for those infected.

We hope the Merck pill will prove effective, but that more people will get vaccinated to prevent becoming infected in the first place.
