Thumbs Up/Down

Happy Birthday, FD

THUMBS UP: The New Ulm Fire Department is celebrating its 150th birthday this weekend, a year later than intended, thanks to COVID-19. The Firefighters Dance is being held on Saturday, with the crowning of Miss New Ulm, at the New Ulm Event Center.

On Sunday, the Fire Department will be setting up fire trucks and equipment, old and new, in Turner Hall Park, where no doubt some veterans will recall tales of the time the department fought the Turner Hall fire while the Rathskeller remained open. The event is from noon to 3 p.m.

New Ulm has been blessed to have a tremendous group of volunteers who have fought fires both big, like the AMPI butter plant fire, and small, and some terribly tragic. We thank all of our firefighters, past and present, for their service.

Respect school buses

THUMBS DOWN: Since school started we have noticed a couple of items in the Police Logs where someone got cited for violating a school bus stop arm. We are glad to see enforcement is being taken seriously. Those school bus stop arms are intended to protect children getting on and off the buses. So far no one has been hurt, and we can make sure they don’t if we all follow the law.
