Thumbs Up/Down
UCC will be missed
Thumbs Down: It’s sad to think that the United Church of Christ in New Ulm will be closing at the end of the year. The church, founded in the 1960s, has a relatively short history, but it is one that has been very open and community oriented. It has hosted speakers on social issues, conducted free monthly community dinners and even has a Little Free Library by its front door.
We understand how a small congregation can grow older over the years, making it difficult to maintain the level of programming and service that has made UCC an important part of New Ulm. We will be sorry to see it close.
Commitment to memorial is there
Thumbs Up: The New Ulm City Council conducted a very thorough and respectful discussion this week on the issue of placing a Vietname Veterans memorial dedicated to the memory of the six New Ulmites who died in the war in German Park. One thing that came out of it was that there is a commitment to have this memorial built, and to have it in a place that is most appropriate and will most honor their memory.
The city is grateful to the anonymous donor of the monument, who stipulated that it should go in German Park, but there are questions about whether that is the best place for it. We are sure the committee appointed by the council will work closely with the donor and come up with a solution to bring about this memorial, which is long overdue.
