Sen. Bernie Sanders’ status as the Democratic frontrunner took a beating on Tuesday.

While Sanders, the self-proclaimed democratic socialist, did win the big delegate prize of California, former Vice President Joe Biden swept to victory in 10 of the 14 states that held their presidential primaries on Super Tuesday. He won in Texas, the second most populous state in Tuesday’s lineup.

Sanders had been running strong in a vast field of candidates before Tuesday. Biden had struggled in Iowa and New Hampshire, but has been coming on strong with a win in South Carolina leading up to Tuesday.

What changed for Biden? Before Tuesday the Democratice field narrowed dramatically, especially with Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg pulling out of the race. The two had been battling with Biden for the moderate Democratic voters. When they threw their support to Biden, the moderates in the party could unite behind one candidate who isn’t touting socialism as his platform.

It’s still a long way to the Democractic convention, but the direction of the race is clearer now than ever, with billionaires Mike Bloomberg and Tom Steyer pulling out, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren fading fast.
